Above: France, billion "piece de 30 deniers", 1710-D ( Lyon mint). Called the "mousquetaire" due to the double-Ls resembling a musketeer's moustaches. Some 122-million were coined at several French mints 1709-13 although only Lyon struck for colonies. It went up (to 45 deniers) and down (to 18 deniers in 1738) in value. Large quantities of the mousqetaire and its half were imported into New France and Î le Royale in later years.
