Above: Silver “stater”, Greek island of Aegina. These “turtles” were coined for many decades, that above – attributed to the period 525-500 B.C. – one of the earlier ones. The earliest of this type (more than 25 years before) are considered to be the very first European coins – and (more arguably) the first true silver coins anywhere. (Approx. actual size).
